Welcome from the Founding Group
From a chance, but very important meeting of hearts and minds at the 2004 Yoga Show, independently-minded teacher trainers decided to get together and offer a creative response to the Fitness Industry’s attempt to define acceptable Yoga training. And, happy surprise, these creative and heart-led individuals discovered friendship as they shared their commitment to embrace a range of teaching styles and approaches to light the lamps of Yoga in the world around them.

Full & Affiliate Membership:

The Founding Members meet regularly at Worralls Grove, the home of Hi-Ki Yoga in the Worcestershire (Midlands) countryside. Full Membership (with modest fees) is open to all teacher training organisations (however large or small) who register their training programmes with The Yoga Register. Affiliate Membership is available for anyone interested in, but not directly involved with, teacher training (e.g. Centre Managers, yoga teachers, etc.). All you have to do is subscribe to our Newsletter to be kept abreast of all the exciting developments.

Aims & Objectives:

Over time clear themes and objectives have evolved:

  • IYN is an organisation for independent Yoga Teacher Trainers. It exists in order:
  • To help Yoga to maintain its essential vitality and creativity and to do its work of bringing peace, love and wisdom into the world;
  • To this end, it aims to promote diversity and integrity in Yoga Teacher Training;
  • To promote and defend the freedom necessary for this project to flourish;
  • To educate the public so that the highest aims of Yoga are kept in view, i.e. that Yoga’s central concern is the raising of human beings to their highest potential.

It employs, or intends to employ, the following means to realise these aims:

  • Proceeding in a completely non-dogmatic way, committed to solidarity whilst honouring difference;
  • Recognising that there are as many paths as hearts of men and women;
  • Encouraging networking amongst teacher trainers in the form of mutual support, educational exchange, joint training projects, debate, organised events, satsang and friendship;
  • Encouraging the solidarity amongst all Yogis that is needed at this time;
  • Acting as a source of accurate information for Yoga teachers and the public through news letters, press articles and the World Wide Web;
  • Developing a voluntary register of competent teachers and teacher training schools and publicising the standard met by those registered;
  • Building links with other organisations.

How to Use This Site:

  • News & Articles - The site contains a wealth of in-depth reflections (by many of our Founder Members) on the whole debate on the future of Yoga. All these articles have A4-formatted, printer-friendly options at the press of a button (see ‘Printer Friendly Version’ above the article displayed in the double column). You can also, quickly and easily, send a copy of an interesting or appropriate article to an important contact with our ‘Mail this Page to a Friend’ button (also above the article displayed in the double column).
  • Forum - If you feel moved to comment on any particular subject then simply click the link at the bottom of the page and you will be instantly taken to our Public Forum where you can post your own contribution. We’d love to hear of your experiences (good, bad or indifferent) and whether we have your permission to use that information on our website or in our Newsletter. This Forum operates along well-established lines familiar to some users. Following a Thread: From the base of an article contribution there will usually be responses that follow a particular line. Others may then wish to comment on ‘those’ comments. This is called a ‘thread’. You may either follow a thread (someone’s line of interest/enquiry) or start a new one from scratch, from the original article. A ‘posting’ is simply an individual contribution to a thread.
  • Members – If you are considering Yoga Teacher Training, from a creative and authentic source, then we can do no better than to heartily recommend any of our Founder Members courses. There are links directly to their sites.
